Fernando J. Obradors (1897–1945, Spain) was a composer, conductor and pianist. He taught himself harmony and counterpoint, and then completed his musical training in Paris before embarking on a professional career as a pianist. In addition to touring Europe as a concert pianist, he composed operettas and zarzuelas which were premiered in Barcelona in the 1920’s.
Obradors’ best known works are the four volumes of Canciones Clásicas Españolas for voice and piano, composed over a twenty-year period between 1921 and 1941. In these art songs, now performed throughout the world, he set poetry by a wide range of Spanish poets spanning multiple centuries. The overarching theme of the first volume is love, and the music is colorfully influenced by flamenco and the Spanish guitar.
