Steven Paxton’s EYE is a rhythmically engaging setting of James Robert Campbell’s poem about science. That’s right, science: atomic structure, electrons circling a nucleus, and the intriguing notion that “we do not feel even slightly dizzy” riding this “merry-go-round of electrons circling on blue nuclei.” Driving 5/8 meters alternate with only slightly more relaxed 3/4 passages, but don’t let that scare you. The music flows smoothly and naturally over an evolving piano ostinato (with a cappella passages interspersed).
