LARGO from New World Symphony
by Antonín Dvořák
/ trans. by Steven Paxton
GRADE 4
synthesized demo
ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK composed his Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World,” in 1893 while living in America. It has become one of the most popular of all symphonies, and its second movement, the Largo, has become so well-recognized that its main theme is often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual.
In this challenging but accessible transcription for four mallet players, the Marimba I part requires a 4-1/3 octave instrument, while the Marimba II part goes down to G♭ and requires a 4-1/2 octave instrument. An alternate Marimba II part is provided that can be played on a 4-1/3 octave instrument.
