A new performance edition for acapella SATB chorus of J. P. Sweelinck‘s beautiful Psalm 96, from his 4th Book of Psalms (Pseaumes de David, Livre 4), published in 1621. Includes piano reduction for rehearsal. The French text is a versification of the well-known Psalm’s opening verses:
_____Sing unto God a new song,
_____Sing, all the earth,
_____Sing and bless his holy Name.
Sweelinck composed four books of polyphonic choral Psalms between 1604 and 1621. They were not intended to be sung in church services, but rather in home gatherings and by groups of amateur singers and instrumentalists (collegia musica). Thus, the style is rhythmically nuanced, often syncopated, and full of sparkling energy.
