The Romanza is the slow second movement from Brahms’s Op. 51, No. 1 string quartet, transcribed for saxophone quartet. It is based on a beautiful, lyrical melodic figure in a context that is harmonically and rhythmically complex and continually developing. This challenges performers to render sensitive, delicately shaped phrases with subtle articulation. An excellent stand-alone concert work or an impressive contest piece.
