TUBACHANTS was composed by Steven Paxton and commissioned by tubist Henry David Payne. It is in three sections, each consisting of gradually unfolding minimalist pitch material. It is best performed in a gallery rather than a concert setting, or in combination with other musical, dramatic, or visual elements. In one recent performance it occurred simultaneously with music for Javanese gamelan, interspersed with poetry readings.
“There is time for the listener to hear all around the piece, just as if looking all around a sculpture. The listener can even hear through it, just as one might walk through a building. It is a slow, leisurely walk, no hurry. Just listen around.”
