RIVER OF PEACE

Steven Paxton’s River of Peace evolves gradually from mysterious drones, to cloudy hymn tune fragments, to a direct presentation of the beautiful hymn “Like a River Glorious,” and finally to filigreed rhythmic fabric based on melodic cells from the hymn. In each segment considerable freedom is given to sections and to individual singers to determine entrances and dynamics, and the entire vocal sound fabric is underlaid with both sustained and rhythmic textures played by piano, organ, and optional synthesizer.
